Your first 90 days at a new job set the trajectory for everything that follows. Get them right, and you will be the person your manager trusts with interesting work by month four. Get them wrong, and you will spend a year trying to recover.
Days 1–30: Listen and learn
Your only job in the first month is to absorb. Take notes in every meeting. Ask "what does success look like in this role?" on day one. Find the one person on the team everyone goes to for answers and buy them coffee.
Days 31–60: Deliver one clear win
By month two, you should have identified one small project or process improvement you can own end-to-end. Ship it, document it, and share the results with your manager.
Days 61–90: Build your network
Schedule 15-minute introductions with people outside your team. Understanding how other departments work makes you more useful in your own role and opens doors for future moves.
The mistakes to avoid
- Trying to change everything in your first month — earn the right to suggest improvements first
- Being invisible — speak up in meetings, even if it is just to ask a clarifying question
- Ignoring feedback — your first performance conversation is a gift, not a threat
